Bruins Battle its way to NCAA's

To the casual observer, when the NCAA Men's Championship begins Tuesday, seeing UCLA among the 30 teams at Inverness Golf Club wouldn't be much of a surprise.
After all, the Bruins are the defending national champions and have palyed in the last six NCAA finals and 13 of the last 15.
The Bruins, however, have had to endure an arduous journey on their way to Toledo. In fact, for much of the season, it appaered the Bruins wouldn't be around to defend their title as they loomed under the .500.

Scott McCarron takes the Lead at the Northern Trust

It's taken more than two years, but Scott McCarron is finally feeling good after having elbow surgery in 2006 that sidelined him for all of 2007 and continued to be bothersome in 2008.
"Yeah, I'm very healthy right now," McCarron said yesterday. "The elbow feels really good right now and I'm actually in better shape right now than I think I've ever been on TOUR. I'm at about the same weight I was when I first came out 15 years ago."
McCarron isn't wasting any time today, either. After an opening-round 64, he birdied two of his first three holes and has moved to 9 under for the tournament. That, at least for the moment, has the 43-year-old atop the leaderboard.
Part of the reason why McCarron might be playing so well here is that he moved down from Reno, Nev., to La Quinta, Calif., to practice and get ready for the season. So far, it appears to be paying off. -- Brian Wacker

UCLA Golf Benefactor Jack Gifford Passes Away

Jack Gifford, a former UCLA baseball letterwinner and dedicated supporter of the Bruins' baseball and golf programs, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 11, at his vacation home in Hawaii. Gifford played first base for the Bruins in the early 1960s and became one of the program's most enthusiastic supporters after graduating from UCLA in 1963.
"I credit much of the recent success of both of our golf teams to Jack's commitment to UCLA," head women's golf coach Carrie Forsyth said. "Jack was a mover and a shaker who had a zest for life that was palpable to everyone in his presence."
"Jack's impact on UCLA and our golf programs will be felt by Bruins for generations," head men's golf coach Derek Freeman said. "His support of our tournament, the CordeValle Classic, has made it one of the best college events in the country."

Tom Pernice Jr. likes to talk.
Off the course, that trait has gained him some notoriety as one of the TOUR's most outspoken players. On the course, however, it has helped him win two tournaments.
When he won the Buick Open in 1999, he was paired with his pal Joey Sindelar. He and Sindelar both like to chat during a round, and Pernice said that helped him win his first TOUR event.

Pavin named new Ryder Cup Captain

NEW YORK -- Corey Pavin's hand was shaking so badly that all he could do was drop the ball and hope it stayed on the tee. It was his first Ryder Cup overseas, and he had the opening tee shot at The Belfry.
Pavin composed himself and won three matches to help the United States to victory in 1993. That was the last time the Americans won the Ryder Cup in Europe, and the last time they successfully defended the cup.
Now the pressure is on Pavin to repeat those feats -- this time as a captain.

Chappell Earns Pac-10 Golfer of the Year Honors

Senior Kevin Chappell on Thursday earned 2008 Pac-10 Golfer of the Year honors and three other UCLA players also received all-conference acclaim.
Chappell became the fifth UCLA player to earn conference golfer of the year honors and the first since Duffy Waldorf in 1985. For the season, Chappell has won one tournament and placed second in three others, including the recently completed Pac-10 Championship which he lost in a playoff. Ranked among the nation's Top 5 individuals all season, he has averaged 70.9 and has played 27 rounds in 15-under par. In addition, he was named Pac-10 Golfer of the Month twice this year. In January he established a 54-hole UCLA scoring record of 15-under par 198.

Last week in New Orleans was a successful week with a tie for 12th finish. Parker McLachlin had a long day Sunday in New Orleans. It was a bit crazy with all of the weather delays and as many of you may have seen I ended up playing 28 holes on Sunday. For the last 28 holes I had a chance to really be in contention there and it was a great experience from me.
